Exhumed: The Black Sun

This image was originally posted on my other art blog, Trail of Breadcrumbs, but I feel that its tone and meaning work better here at Zombie Bites.  Here we have a personification of the Black Sun, an Occult as well as Alchemical symbol.  When coloring this piece, I felt like the image needed some moody lighting to set off the brooding aspect of the piece.  I wanted to give the piece the feeling of a much larger space so I added a mist effect by layering a series of soft gradients throughout the image.

Tattoo: Worlds Within

Here we have an echo of sleeping Vishnu and a visual record of a time of personal recuperation.  The black and white piece was Originally posted on Wind of the Gods, but I refurbished it with fresh color for the Asheville Tattoo Festival.  Hmph - I just noticed a Mayan glyph quality to this image. I may have to explore this square construction more.

From the Sketchbook Archives: Halloween Poster Pieces

Here are some unused sketches and color elements for a Halloween poster from several years ago.  Much of the imagery here is inspired by early twentieth century Halloween paraphernalia.

From the Archives: Faces

Here is an unfinished digital piece.  This was my attempt to express a difficult situation several years ago where I attempted to reconnect with an old friend who wasn't as friendly as I remembered.  I never finished this piece and I did not reconnect with the friend.

From the Sketchbook Archives: Dream Shard

Images I recorded from a dream / nightmare. I think the image was from a dream but turned quickly into a story upon waking.  In the dream there was a black rectangular cuboid that was very shiny.  At its base was a grotesque substance that looked as though the feeling of illness were given a physical form.  It was olive colored with dark eggplant purple bubbles emerging from it. It had integrated itself into a building and was sticking out of a brick wall.

From the Sketchbook Archives: Purple Ghost

This image is similar to a previous piece with the same theme. I've wondered several times if I were picking up on some ghost or ambient presence in the house where I used to live.  Both drawings were done in that space.  There was a definite other sadness to my experience with the drawing of each of these images.  I rarely got anymore information each time I drew other than that strong feeling of sorrow.

From the Sketchbook Archives: Open Skull

I cannot remember my original motivation for this image.  I don't recall being enamored of a Cyclops skull, but I do find the gaping hole disturbing.  Maybe a little inspiration for non-traditional skulls from Wayne Barlowe going on here as well.  I do love his work.

From the Archives: The Collapse

I wonder if this what a snake's skin looks like to the snake after it has been shed?  That is kind of how this feels to me now.  I recall an overwhelming feeling of dismay and despair upon drawing this originally, but now it seems more like a discarded skin, an empty mask that I once wore.  I am also getting a strong Grey Alien vibe here...or maybe a one of their corpses.

A bit of a nod here to the Munch's The Scream.  Also an intentional attempt at duplication of woodgrain or linoleum cut print within Photoshop. In the end, just a sketch, but an interesting exploration nonetheless.

From The Darkness

My favorite kind of Monster next to Zombies - Werewolves.  I'm not necessarily saying what this is, although it does look that way.  I discovered this image while working on some thing else, so who knows.  Enjoi!  :-)

UPDATE 011515:

A variation of this this piece is now available on a tshirt or other cool paraphernalia at my Neatoshop!  Drop by and check it out!

24 HOUR MOVIETHON!

It has been quite awhile since my last posts.
Here some of the stuff that has been happening in that time.

This was a logo I create for my friend Josh.  Each year he hosts a Moviethon for his birthday.  Did I mention its 24 hours long?  Yeah.  I know.  I can over after work and actually made it to the end.  I was surprised myself.  The logo was created completely in Adobe Illustrator.  later it was added to the poster Josh created with covers of all the movies we watched.

Pop Sigil Desktop

I created this on around the idea of
taking a magical theorem and embodying it visually.
This one is "Use what works"
Make it your desktop for ab it and stare at it.
The space within the circle becomes active and magnetic
then It pops like a firecracker.
Fun stuff.
