From the Archives: November

A very recent piece from some of my painting play in Photoshop and a general litmus for how I felt after this years election cycle.

Saturday Sketch: Bronze Age Samhain

Sorry for the delay on this one.  Things kind of got backed up this Halloweekend.

Here we have the druid form of Samhain from the first Vision and the Scarlet Witch limited series.  His spirit has been trapped in the Druid Tome and was released on All Hallow's Eve.  The Scarlet Witch destroyed the tome and banished his spirit.

Saturday Sketch: Lord Pumpkin

Lord Pumpkin was a villain from the now defunct Malibu comics Ultraverse.  I've never read any stories with him in them, but how could I resist the devilish figure of mayhem he presents!

From The Archives: Devil May Care

Here's an older quick sketch of a devilish character.  My original intent for the character was as a rogue hero or a villain.  That may still happen.  I have several stories that he would fit nicely into.

Saturday Sketch: Mervyn Pumpkinhead

Second amongst this month's Halloween themed Saturday Sketches, we have Mervyn Pumpkinhead from the pages of Sandman.  I've always like Mervyn.  There's just something about a smart mouthed cigarette smoking pumpkinheaded scarecrow!

Saturday Sketch: Original Jack O'Lantern

To celebrate the Halloween season, all of my Saturday Sketches for this month will have some kind of connection to to the darksome holiday.  This week we have Jason Macendale, the Original Jack O'Lantern.  He first appeared in Machine Man #19, but later became a regular Spider-man villain.

It wasn't until I began research for this piece that I found out he originated in Machine Man.  The first time I saw this character way back in Amazing Spider-man #254,  I immediately wanted more.  He has a flaming Jack o'lantern head!  What's not to love?!  I do have to admit a certain amount of inspiration from this character for Jack, the villainous force behind last year's Night of the Cauldron.

Saturday Sketch: Silver Age Cain

Here is Cain from the House of Mystery.  I first met Cain and his brother Abel in the early issues of Sandman, but they both appeared long before.  Doing my research for this piece I never realized that Berni Wrightson was so involved with the House of Mystery.  I also did not realize that it was such a long running title.  I've got some back issue tracking to do.  :-)

Also, this piece is much larger than the normal Saturday Sketches.  I was in a groove when I began working on it and before I realized the size difference I was mostly finished.  So this one isn't sketchcard size.

From the Archives: Moon Mystery

Done in an older contour style, here is a sketch of an embodiment of the mystery of the moon.  There is an echo of ancient Egyptian style to the imagery and a faint feeling of the Goddess Isis within the image.  These choices were not intentional at the time.  I often drew in this style ecstatically with no planned intention when I began drawing.  I would just begin drawing to see what emerged.  This process is what evolved into the process I use to create the pieces within the Psyche Delectus Tenebrarum.

Saturday Sketch: Golden Age Doctor Fate with Orb

Here is a second sketch and the final piece of my Golden Age Doctor Fate set.  There are several characters from the early stories that I haven't addressed.  I may add them to the set later, but for the time being this is the last.

Saturday Sketch: Golden Age Ian Karkull

One of Doctor Fate's earlier villains, Ian Karkull plagues Doctor Fate and the Golden Age Green Lantern well into the modern age of comics.  During their first encounter, it is Doctor Fate that causes Karkull to become trapped in his shadow form.

Saturday Sketch: Golden Age Mister Who

Another of Doctor Fate's early foes, Mister Who gained shape changing and size changing abilities from ingesting Solution Z!  Mister Who showed up later in Doctor Fate's chronology, fighting against the All-Star Squadron as member of the Monster Society of Evil.

Saturday Sketch: Mango the Mighty

Here we have one of Doctor Fate's early adversaries, Mango the Mighty. Although his name doesn't exactly inspire fear, this sorcerer was murdering people with globes of fire before the Doctor finally shows up.  Mango also summons a horde of angry undead, the Legions of the Styx,  to fight for him against the Doctor but in the end he loses.  Of course.

From the Archives: Paperclip Bird

Here's an older sketch of a creepy bird thing.  I've always found it especially disturbing when inanimate objects start moving around of their own volition.

Saturday Sketch: Golden Age Nabu

Here we have the ancient Egyptian Lord of Order, Nabu the Wise, as he appeared in Doctor Fate's Origin in More Fun Comics #67.  I've always been fascinated by the symbiotic relationship between Nabu and Kent Nelson as the Doctor.

From the Archives: Naga

I've always been disturbed by snake creatures with humanoid heads.  I think at the time I drew this that I may have had something more complex in mind, but it never went any further than this.
