This piece was created very shortly after
Sharpie premiered their new
fine tip writing pens. Needless to say I was VERY excited by the mark making possibilities. Straight to paper here with no graphite sketching before the pen. I was playing with the new fine point and this little guy emerged.
I was trying to go for a different take and bring in some elements beyond the standard kind of sheet ghost. At the same time I wanted to keep that kind of loose silly putty aspect that cartoon ghosts have. And of course as always, a huge amount of love here for
Mike Mignola.

All praise the fine tip Sharpie! That's what led to my very first Fuzzy Skeletonian.
Also, going straight to paper is a great way to work. It makes you have to deal with every mark you make. You can't go back and erase and things simply emerge, as you mentioned.
I'm enjoying the dramatic, story-telling look to this. I can hear the wind howling!
Yes, the fine tipped Sharpie pens were a revelation! I love them. I just wish they were cheaper...but man those delicious fine lines! :-P
When I did this sketch, it had been awhile since I'd done a straight to paper piece...very refreshing. Most of the time this kind of sketch ends up with infinite hash marks, but occasionally a clean gem like this one emerges.
