Featured Creature: Devil's Square, The Bloody Gem

This mysterious gem possesses a deadly and addictive power.  To the untrained eye the gem looks much like a gaudy piece of costume jewelry.  However, when exposed to blood, the gem glows with a pulsating red light and the terrible power within it is activated.

The history of this gem will be revealed in several upcoming Devil's Square stories.

Featured Creature: Devil's Square, The Ruddy Skull

A human skull covered in rust, the Ruddy Skull continually sheds flakes but never seems to lose any of its mass.  The metallic ball in the eye socket appears to be silver and is unaffected by the corrosion.  All attempts to remove the silver ball have failed.  Those who have held the skull claim to see visions of the past, of distant locations and people, and sometimes of the future.

The Ruddy Skull has not yet appeared in any Devil's Square fiction to date, but will feature prominently in an upcoming Devil's Square story.

Featured Creature: The Devil's Square, Scratch

Here we have a loose portrait of Scratch chained in his cage.  Here he's looking kind of sad and more fearful than his usual malicious, but that chain is on him for a reason.

Featured Creature: Devil's Square, Scrag

I'm going to take a break from posting fiction for awhile.  My batteries are running very low and I need to refill.  In the meantime here is the beginning of a set of portraits of The Devil's Square.  I haven't posted much about them in awhile, but I have been working on them in the background.

Featured Creature: The Waverly House

"The Waverly house has been abandoned for well over ten years.  Every spring, the property used to be covered with brightly colored flowers, but after the Waverly family disappeared, it grew thick with wild grass and tall weeds.  Over the years several real estate companies have tried to sell the property, but as soon as any of them toured the house they changed their minds mighty quick.  Eventually, the Waverly house was condemned by the city.

The summer that the Waverlies disappeared saw some of the worst storms on record in Colby county.  One night, lightning struck the tall oak at the back of the property.  That same night, the youngest child, Nathaniel, died suddenly.  A tornado had ripped up the northern part of the county as little Nathaniel was breathing his last.  The coroner's report listed that Nathaniel died of crib death, but anyone who has seen the Waverly house at night knows otherwise.  Something bad come down out of that storm and took root.  That house ain't been right ever since.

Featured Creature: The Rathbone Assignment: Part III, Derrick Comes Home

The Rathbone Assignment:
Part III, Derrick Comes Home

Erica closed her eyes against the sorrow that gripped her.  She felt as if the ground beneath her had suddenly opened up and that instead of being buried, she had fallen into empty space.  There was no land to break her fall, no release, just an endless descent.  She pushed her hand against the back of the recliner to feel something solid.  She ran her fingers across it but it was only a thick cloth wrapped tightly over the frame of the chair and gave unpleasantly under her touch.  She retracted her hand and scooted herself closer against the wall.

Erica reached out instead with her mind for something solid to latch onto.  She thought of the locked doors and windows and the remains of the duct tape on the kitchen counter.  These held no comfort, no safety.  She thought of the trees on her drive home and the air as she drove.  This offered her a moments refuge but then she remembered the steaks and asparagus growing warm on the kitchen counter, the soda bottles in the driveway, and the bag with the test in it still sitting in the passenger seat of the minivan.  She clenched her teeth to try and contain the sob that threatened to erupt from her throat.  She held her legs against herself in the darkness and rocked herself gently until her tears subsided.

Featured Creature: The Rathbone Assignment Part II, Instructions in the Dark

The Rathbone Assignment:
Part II, Instructions in the Dark

Erica's knees gave way.  Her elbow hit the kitchen counter and her right arm went into the sink, breaking her fall.  The pain was excruciating and she nearly lost her grip on the phone, but it prevented her from collapsing completely.

"Mrs. Wilson!  Are you Alright?!"

"I'm Okay, I'm Okay.  I just slipped...just- just gimme a second."  She pushed her breath out hard.  She lifted herself up, using the counter for support.  She had not realized that her vision had blacked out until she began to see the dim light from the kitchen window reappear.  She slowly pulled herself up to a standing position.  She held herself there for several moments, focusing on the rise and fall of her breathing.

"Hold on, I dropped the flashlight."  She used the light of her phone to scan the floor and quickly found the flashlight in a corner.  She picked it up and twisted the head.  It shone with a dull yellowed light, creating a small halo around her feet.

"Okay.  I've got it."

Featured Creature: The Rathbone Assignment Part I, Erica's Test

The Rathbone Assignment Part I:
Erica's Test

Erica grabbed the plastic grocery bag with the toothpaste and toiletries in it to keep in the front seat with her.  She placed the rest of the grocery bags in the back of her minivan and closed the hatch.  She reached down into the bag of toiletries and gently took out the plain pink box.  Such a simple design, she thought, for something so complex.

Birds at the edge of the parking lot took flight.  She paused to watch the them as they scattered and reorganized into a flock in the air.  They formed a soft edged triangle as they flew behind the far end of the grocery store.  Beyond them, behind a purple bank of clouds, the sun was burning the horizon a deep orange.  She dropped the box back into the bag and tossed the bag into the passenger seat with her purse.

She exited the parking lot onto Hwy 130 south and headed home.  It was a long drive to the house but Erica always enjoyed the forest and farmland she passed along the way.  Except for the Army base, Rathbone was just a small country town. Erica didn't mind, she enjoyed the solitude.  In fact, when she found out that Derrick had gotten the assignment at the Rathbone base, she was ecstatic.  She had grown up in this exact kind of landscape and it always made her feel like home.  It was something that she had always wanted her children to experience and to understand.

Featured Creature: In The Cities

"In the cities, the effects of the plague were much worse.  Within the massive populations of larger cities, the infection spread almost overnight.  The newly dead, enclosed within the complex networks of city infrastructures, were restricted to close quarters and did not disburse into smaller groups as in rural areas.

Featured Creature: The Moonlight Calls It Forth

"We entered the graveyard in the hour after midnight and it was not long before we saw the thing.  We noticed a figure moving oddly in the shadow of a tall tree.  As we walked closer, the horror that had been a man emerged into the full light of the moon.

Its putrescence was obvious as it staggered slowly towards us.  The rancid odor coming off the thing poisoned the very air.  I covered my mouth with the neck of my shirt to keep from retching.

Featured Creature: Reunion at the Merrimon Library Part IX, Deidre's Warning

Reunion at the
Merrimon Library:
Part IX,
Deidre's Warning

Alan fought to open his eyes.  He was warm and comfortable and sedated within ease.  He felt as though his brain were wrapped tight in a thick comforter.  There was a warm and gentle pressure against his palm.  He woke to someone holding his hand.  When he finally got his eyes to open he struggled to focus on the figure at his side.  It was Deidre.  He squinted into wakefulness and offered a weak smile.  Deidre smiled back.

"Hi."

"Hi yourself."  She leaned in closer and rested her other hand on his forearm.  They sat silently for a moment and enjoyed a quiet reunion.  They both tried to hold back, but soon there were tears.  They held on to each other in the silence for a long while.

"I came as quickly as I could. Her eyes were glassy.  He could tell she had not slept in some time.

"How long have I been out?"

"Two days."

Featured Creature: Reunion at the Merrimon Library Part VIII, The Blue Chasm

Reunion at the
Merrimon Library:
Part VIII,
The Blue Chasm

The large truck careened toward Alan.  It crushed the bookshelves and scattered books into the air as it plowed forward.  The edge of a shelf hit one of the smaller jellyfish and the thing exploded in a burst of slimy luminescence.  He turned quickly and pushed hard with his legs.  The last thing he saw as he leapt away was the creature entwined with Tim's body pressed flat against the truck's front end.  He jumped.

The world twisted around him and a lightning bolt of pain shot up his leg.  The library became a blur as Alan was tossed about.  He landed hard against a shelf and it fell to the ground.  The truck front flattened against the wall with a metallic grinding thud.  There was a bright flash of bluish light and the entire building shook violently.

Featured Creature: Reunion at the Merrimon Library Part VII, The Rune of Banishment

Reunion at the
Merrimon Library:
Part VII,
The Rune of Banishment

Alan quickly stacked the books again in the circle formation Tim had originally created.  The things behind the wall had begun emitting a sickening blue light that vibrated like the light from the jellyfish creatures but it gave him more than enough illumination to find Die Tür Des Bösen amongst the scattered volumes.  He frantically flipped the pages until he found the illustration with the banishing rune.  To draw the rune, Alan chose a spot on the wall adjacent to the bulging shapes.  He ran over the banishing ritual in his head adding the name of the rune, Eisott Mudulica.  He took a deep breath.

Just then the wall beside him bowed out about two feet.  It pulsed barely inches from from his face.  Thick drops of jelly dripped from it.  Alan's breath came in sharp short gasps.  As the wall stretched thin he could see a massive shape beyond , another creature like the others, but as large as a truck.  It pushed hard against the skin of the wall, but luckily the barrier held.  The monstrous shape on the other side retracted and the wall fell back into place.  However, the skin of the wall sagged slightly this time, like an empty balloon.
