Here we have a reinvestigation of a previous sketch of one of my favorite dark Marvel comics characters, D'spayre. With the color, I wanted to clean the drawing up a bit and give him a dreary backdrop to look menacing against. I also made the line work in the image part of the color. As I began I had redrawn all of the line work in black, but I found the contrast too harsh. With the color line work he takes on a phantom quality which suits D'spayre very well.

A human skull covered in rust, the Ruddy Skull continually sheds flakes but never seems to lose any of its mass. The metallic ball in the eye socket appears to be silver and is unaffected by the corrosion. All attempts to remove the silver ball have failed. Those who have held the skull claim to see visions of the past, of distant locations and people, and sometimes of the future.
The Ruddy Skull has not yet appeared in any Devil's Square fiction to date, but will feature prominently in an upcoming Devil's Square story.

Here we have one of Doctor Fate's early adversaries, Mango the Mighty. Although his name doesn't exactly inspire fear, this sorcerer was murdering people with globes of fire before the Doctor finally shows up. Mango also summons a horde of angry undead, the Legions of the Styx, to fight for him against the Doctor but in the end he loses. Of course.

Here's an older sketch of a creepy bird thing. I've always found it especially disturbing when inanimate objects start moving around of their own volition.
Here we have the ancient Egyptian Lord of Order, Nabu the Wise, as he appeared in Doctor Fate's Origin in More Fun Comics #67. I've always been fascinated by the symbiotic relationship between Nabu and Kent Nelson as the Doctor.

I've always been disturbed by snake creatures with humanoid heads. I think at the time I drew this that I may have had something more complex in mind, but it never went any further than this.
Denial is its own gestating darkness.

Meet Agent Boehler of the Department of Extranormal Phenomena. He hasn't appeared in any of the Devil's Square fiction I've presented to date, but he will eventually cross paths and possibly swords with the Square.
