Exhumed: Identity

I was excited to dig into this piece with color.  Originally I had imagined the energy surrounding the mask as a warm set of colors.  However, as soon as I began working with color I knew that it had to be cool blues.  I added the muted background because I wanted to develop the space within the piece more without detracting from the focus on the foreground entity.  Looking at this now, I think this may be in the same reality, the same underworld as an earlier piece.

Exhumed: Searching The Stars

This piece was always about vastness and immensity, so with the color, I tried to push the depth of the space within the piece further.  Also I feel that with the color I was able to give the figure in the foreground a bit more substance and form as opposed to the heavily designed shapes in the black and white version.  I apologize for the lack of darkness or horror here.  Exhumed is about previous posts and as much as I try to keep Zombie Bites completely dark, sometimes the light just slips in.

Exhumed: The Black Sun

This image was originally posted on my other art blog, Trail of Breadcrumbs, but I feel that its tone and meaning work better here at Zombie Bites.  Here we have a personification of the Black Sun, an Occult as well as Alchemical symbol.  When coloring this piece, I felt like the image needed some moody lighting to set off the brooding aspect of the piece.  I wanted to give the piece the feeling of a much larger space so I added a mist effect by layering a series of soft gradients throughout the image.

Exhumed: Autumn Winds

With the style of the original image for Autumn Winds I was alluding to antique Halloween images.  Keeping that impetus in mind for the color version, I used a muted color palette to make the final image look aged.

From the Archives: Moody Sketches

Here are a couple of moody developmental sketches from a zombie comic I was working on some time ago.  I was planning something grandiose at the time, but this one may still emerge as a single story.

From the Archives: Eagle of Vz Sketches

Here are some of my developmental sketches for my recent Featured Creature post, Eagle of Vz.  These were done several months before the finished image was completed.

From the Archives: Sub Basement

Here we have a creepy super science sub basement where something horrible escaped.  This was a development sketch for a comic book story I was working on at the time.  It kind of went to the back burners, but it may come back eventually.  Like zombies, stories rarely stay dead forever.  :-)

Featured Creature: The Thing from the Sky

The following is an excerpt from a Burkens County police report of an eyewitness account of the accident that occurred at Highway 14 on December 3rd, 2012:

The fog was so thick that day you couldn't see no more than five or ten feet in front a you.  I told mama to slow down as we hit that curve near the top a' fourteen.  Didn't wanna bump into nobody.  That section a road is a bit tricky.

From the Archives: Purple Sharpie Portrait

This is me playing with purple sharpies again.  A quick portrait here exploring some P. Craig Russell style line work.  I think I'd just gotten some new sharpies and was breaking them in.  Not as much time to noodle things the way I used to.  I used to get lost in the lines for hours.

From the Archives: Wounded Heart

Here's a quick sketch from an old sketchbook.  I used Sharpie and a ball point on this one.  I think I was at work when I did it.  If cleaned up and redrawn, I think this would make a decent tattoo design.

From the Archives: Dream DiBit

These iridescent scarabs showed up in a couple of dreams I had long ago. They were about 3.5 inches long and about as thick as the width of a teaspoon.  The reproduction I've done here is close but I feel like it needs to be redrawn on black paper or some such.  I created the second image in Photoshop to get a little closer to their actual appearance and color from the dreams.  They seemed to have a black base color with a opalescent metallic sheen to them.

From the Archives: Earth Man

This is one of my first color explorations into working with Sharpies.  I think there may be some other type of marker involved here also.  This was at the very beginning before I converted to Sharpies only.

Featured Creature: Slave of Vz

Following is one of the 911 call records from the Santee 57 Incident that occurred the evening of May 1st, 2012 at 9:12PM EST:

"Dispatcher:  911 Where is your emergency?

Male Caller: There's been an accident!

Dispatcher:  What's your location Sir?

Male Caller:  I'm at the Santee 57 Motel.  A woman just crashed her suburban into the side of the motel.  She was thrown out, She's lying face down.

From the Archives: The Phalman

"Androgynous but with a high level of brute strength, the Phalman is a savage and dangerous entity.  No one knows exactly where it came from or if its species is other than human.  Some speculate that it is a demon in the form of a man, others say that is like a werewolf but in a perpetual state of madness and savagery."

UPDATE Night of the Living Dead: Barbara Zombie Greyscale

Here we have the greyscale of an earlier drawing of Barbara from the original Night of the Living Dead, after we see her dragged into an undead horde.  With there being no living flesh left at the old farm house, she is wandering off into the night to find something fresh.

From the Archives: Neon Vampire

Here's something I recently drew at the library in between other things.  I hadn't done any fresh sharpie work in a bit and decided to play to loosen up and pass the time.  I've been so focused lately on more realistic lighting for the Featured Creatures that on this one I just wanted to cut loose and go more emotive.

Featured Creature: The Spawn of Vz

"Slowly, I moved into the room.  The smell of mildew and rot was overwhelming.  I covered my mouth and nose with my shirt sleeve, trying not to gag.  The floor was a sea of trash: half eaten pizza crusts, emptied soup cans, a bicycle tire, myriad candy bar wrappers, a soiled shirt, empty soda cans and bottles, a child's stuffed animal, wadded paper and boxes, and several filthy overturned buckets.  As I crossed into the room, large dark shapes skittered out of my path, disappearing into the canyons of trash.

Featured Creature: The Devil's Square, Hooded Figure

Excerpt from Liam Hofstadter's report for the Department of Extranormal Phenomena (DEP), Superhuman and Supernatural Threats in the New Millennium

"This hooded figure has been observed on multiple occasions interacting with the Devil's Square team.  We are unsure of its exact association with that group, but the creature is obviously other dimensional in origin. However, it does not match records of any known species currently operating within the earth sphere.

Featured Creature Bonus: Devil's Square, Scratch Portrait

Here is a portrait of Scratch from the Devil's Square.  I was in between things at the library and felt like a bit of color sketching for a change.  It was a fun challenge also as I didn't have my entire pen collection with me so my color palette was limited.  I had to create some of the colors by mixing others: one of my favorite pastimes.
