Saturday Sketch: Doctor Destiny

John Dee, Doctor Destiny, has always been one of my favorite DC villains.  Destiny was one of the earliest enemies of the Justice League of America.  I've always found his hooded skeletal visage especially creepy.

From the Archives: The Horde of July

Here we have the Zombie Bites header from July 2014, The Horde of July. As the zombie infection spread, all armed forces were called upon to defend the human race.  In the end, the soldiers were overwhelmed and reanimated as more mutilated hosts.  In the sweltering heat of summer the horde seeks out those it once sought to protect.  The horde hungers.

~

During 2014, I began creating a new header each month depicting a scene associated with the dominate holiday for that month but with a zombie twist.  I'll be posting the headers here in From the Archives to give them a nice dark corner to fester in.  I'll also be posting the images with and without the logo so you can see the parts of the background image that were covered by the logo.  Thanks for viewing and reading!

I apologize that I am unable to post the header without the logo.  I had a computer crash back in August of 2014 and lost access to some of my files and data.  I do not currently have access to the logo-less version of this image, but as soon as I do, I will post it here.

If you like what you see here, be sure to check out Valentine's Day, Saint Patrick's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, and Father's Day.

From the Archives: Father's Day

Here we have the Zombie Bites header from the month of June 2014, Father's Day.  Who knows what happened outside to cause the cook out to go horribly awry.  What dread horror in the backyard made Daddy this way?  Mother and child are safe and hiding within the house, but for how long?  Daddy sure looks hungry.

I apologize that I am unable to post the header without the logo.  I had a computer crash back in August of 2014 and lost access to some of my files and data.  I do not currently have access to the logo-less version of this image, but as soon as I do, I will post it here.

Exhumed: Tornado of Self

An older piece depicting a disturbed emotive state.  With the color reinvestigation, I wanted to add a stronger sense of motion within the piece to indicate that the individual distortion had begun to effect the surrounding environment.  I also chose to confine my palette to "body" colors: light flesh, blood, excretions.  With the use of these body specific colors, my intent was to give the image a subtle disturbing quality that intimated the visceral aspects of the black and white sketch with further graphic representation.

Autumn / Winter Delays

I'm sorry that things have been so disrupted at Zombie Bites of late.  I've developed some reservations about what I am actually accomplishing and it has completely sapped any motivation.  The work I've produced over the past year has not achieved any of the goals I desired.

It is time for a change.  Right now, I'm unsure what form that change will take.  For now my posts here will be more sporadic.  There are several unfinished stories that I do want to complete, but things are going to slow down here as I work my next move.  I appreciate all of you who have followed so far.  I appreciate your readership, patience, and support.  I'll keep you posted as things develop.

Exhumed: Lich

Here we've exhumed a sketch of a Lich from a fantasy story I was working on.  In the color reinvestigation I digitally inked the image then added a background doorway for this creepy guy to have just walked through.  I kept the lighting dim to add to the ambiance and surrounded him in a cloud of noxious fog to keep him ghostly despite his black cloak.

Saturday Sketch: The Interloper

Here we have the Interloper, an Eternal who appeared in the last issues of the New Defenders run.  After he first appeared, he spent several issues traveling across the world to get to the New Defenders.  He literally walked across the ocean from the Russia to North America to help stop the Dragon of the Moon.

Featured Creature: Whisperers

Excerpted From Marge Hollander's Digest of Demons and Devils:

"Whisperers are dire phantoms that will lead humans psychically and emotionally astray even unto death.  A Whisperer will seek out a victim that is already emotionally agitated or distraught and begin to misdirect their emotions towards the goals of the Whisperer.  It is unknown exactly how the phantoms control their victims, but those who have survived the persuasions of these demonic ghosts claim to have heard whispering voices and to have encountered vaporous apparitions.

Saturday Sketch: Kirby's Merlin

Here we have Merlin the Magician from the first run of The Demon.  I had a blast doing this piece!  Every time I study Jack Kirby's work I learn something new about the man's genius.

With this piece, I learned that the heavily designed aspect of Kirby's style subtly forces the viewer to work at understanding the image.  Kirby's visual language is simple and direct, but his stylistic presentation forces the viewer to work a little harder to understand exactly what it is that they are seeing.  To me this comes across as a learning tool.  His style teaches the understanding of art simply by being what it is.  It requires the viewer to translate.

While I was researching for this piece, I also noticed that there is something oddly psychedelic about Kirby's artwork.  It may have just been that I had taken too much cough medicine while fighting off my recent sinus infection, but all the pieces I was looking at seemed to have a similar quality to psychedelic posters from the sixties.  I noticed it specifically in his later work:  The Demon, Machine Man, The Eternals, New Gods, Captain Victory.

I must offer my apologies on this piece as it is not the usual sketchcard size.  I got into the groove while doing studies of Merlin's costume, then that turned into sketching and before I knew it I was finished.  At that point I realized I had been drawing the wrong size.

I may permanently go to the larger size.  Both sizes takes about the same amount of time to complete and I can get more detail in the larger image.  The whole point of the Saturday Sketches has always been more about the time limit to complete the drawing.  I do enjoy the extra detail.  I'll have mull that one over.
